A rare Civil War designating flag was among several items offered up for auction in Chadds Ford from the family of Declaration of Independence signatory Francis Hopkinson, reports antiquesandhearts.com.

The flag, labeled “2 Army Corps 2 Div 3 Brig” sold for $60,000 at William Bunch Auction in Chadds Ford on June 23.

William H. Horstman & Sons of Philadelphia created the flag which is attached to a brigade honored with a plaque at Gettysburg Battlefield. It is unknown if the flag flew at Gettysburg but it is associated with this brigade that fought a battle there.

Francis Hopkinson was a lawyer, judge, author, composer, merchant and held public office.

He was a delegate from New Jersey at the Second Continental Congress when it met in Philadelphia in 1776 and was one of the signers of the Declaration of Independence.

Hopkinson is credited with designing early versions of the American flag, for the U.S. and the U.S. Navy.

He also designed Continental paper money and the first United States coin.

Hopkinson’s direct descendants auctioned a large collection of the multigenerational archives that had been stored in 25 large steamer trunks.

The collection included Americana, documents, fine arts and books.
