As long term care and healthcare facilities struggle to find new supplies of personal protective equipment, one science and technology group is using a food supply warehouse in Glen Mills to  sanitize N95 masks for reuse, reports Joyce Evans for fox29.com.

Battelle global science and technology group is using a Suburban Food Services facility to  process used N95 masks.

It’s an eight-hour process running 24 hours a day, seven days a week, air-drying the masks. The process makes sure there are no contaminants or chemicals.

“We want to make sure that the vaporized hydrogen peroxide has completely left,” said Vivian Smith, principal research scientist with the group.

The free service for hospitals and medical groups has been used on hundreds of masks from hospitals in Pennsylvania. The group has processed more than 500 masks so far.

Battelle is using a $415 million grant to provide the service.

The group, which researches innovative science and technology solutions, has lately been helping companies worldwide recycle personal protective equipment.

“It’s a little bit different, but I’m happy to be doing this work in the United States where I can help American citizens,” Smith said.
