Of all the events cancelled because of the pandemic, Little League is one that will be at the top, writes Stephen Silver for The Philadelphia Inquirer.

For Silver, his family and for his home town of Marple Township, Little League is more than just a game. It’s a multi-generational community gathering place, a source of local pride.

Silver, a Little League coach, has two sons, 8 and 10, who have been playing at South Marple Little League since tee ball at age 4.

He’s watched team friendships grow through the years and he’s seen nervous players turn into “superlative” batters and pitchers.

“The teamwork and camaraderie that come with being part of a Little League squad are valuable life skills for kids to learn,” he writes. “These kids care about the games, a lot.”

They attend twice-weekly practices, attend games once or twice a week and cheer on their friends at their games.

He’s also seen adults form lasting friendships and a sense of community.

He agrees that not playing this spring was the right decision.

“But that said, my family is left with sadness, about missing one of our favorite things.”
