NBC Brings Delaware County’s Health Department Problem, and the Role of Good Neighbors, Into National Spotlight
Chester County’s decision to help Delaware County through this pandemic demonstrates the advantages of regional county cooperation and highlights the importance of being good neighbors, as reported by Corky Siemaszko for NBCnews.com.
NBC News has turned Delaware County’s plight of having no health department during a health crisis into a national story.
Delaware County was just getting a health department off the ground when the coronavirus hit, overwhelming three county workers with no public health training, charged with handling the situation.
To date, the county has eight coronavirus-related deaths and more than 390 cases.
It turned to the Pennsylvania Health Department for help, but the state also had to oversee all the other counties in the state.
“Chester County is doing an amazing job aiding us during this crisis,” said Delaware County Council Vice Chairman Monica Taylor. “They are performing all contact tracing, quarantining and isolation of those infected, organization of all health care networks and hospitals in the county.”
They also got Delaware County’s call center up and running.
There’s no end date on Delco’s contract with Chester County’s health department, though its obligations only extend to COVID-19-related issues.
