Wawa continues to expand its food optons. Now it's testing burgers, chicken sandwiches and waffle fries. Image via Wawa.

Wawa is testing new food options like hamburgers, waffle fries and breaded chicken sandwiches at six select stores, writes Laura Smythe for Philadelphia Business Journal.

An offering of burgers and breaded chicken sandwiches would have Wawa competing against national chains like McDonald’s, Burger King and Shake Shack.

“We are testing new options specifically for dinner as we continue to connect with customers in new ways and focus on fulfilling our customers’ lives at all times of the day,” Wawa spokeswoman Lori Bruce told the Philadelphia Business Journal in an email.

The meals are available on brioche buns. Burger toppings include bacon, tomato, pickles, cheddar cheese, lettuce and garlic aioli.

At one test store in Horsham, the burger and chicken sandwich cost $5.49. The waffle fries are $1.99.

New product trial runs and new store designs help Wawa keep up with customers’ changing needs.

A list of all six stores testing the offerings has not been released.

Wawa has been annually ranked among the top convenience stores in the country. Food & Wine puts the chain at No. 2 in the U.S., only beat out by Texas’ cult favorite Buc-ees.
