Environment and energy took center stage Feb. 19 when Delaware County Council unanimously approved a resolution creating a Delaware County Sustainability Commission to preserve and protect the county’s natural and cultural environment.

The Commission will:

  • Recommend the best environmental and energy practices for:
  1. County buildings and facilities.
  2. Operations, purchasing and energy sources.
  3. Fuels, vehicles and transportation.
  4. Housing.
  5. Air quality.
  6. Stormwater management.
  7. Natural and cultural resource protection.
  8. Wildlife preservation.
  9. Reducing climate change impact.
  • Public promotion/education about the county’s existing environmental and energy policies and initiatives.
  • Recommend voluntary actions, projects, and programs for municipalities, businesses, non-profits, and other partners to implement county environmental and energy policies.
  • Provide ongoing input into a Delaware County Sustainability Action Plan.
  • Recommend actions, projects, and programs to County Council and county departments.

“The resolution reflects our recognition that the County needs to step up and take responsibility and leadership, both internally and externally and take a role stewarding our County’s natural resources and environment,” said Councilwoman Elaine Paul Schaefer.

Eight members from the county’ senior management and nine members of the public with expertise in environmental issues will make up the Commission and hold public meetings.
