Harrah’s Philadelphia Casino and Racetrack donated $20,000 to the Riverfront Alliance of Delaware County for a security initiative in uptown Chester, writes Colin Ainsworth for Delco News Network.

The funding will pay for 24 exterior lights and cameras to create an electronic town watch for Chester homes.

They will focus on the Nova Vista neighborhoods, west of the 1700 block of Edgmont Avenue,  and in the Irvington Hills neighborhood, from East 23rd and East 25th streets between Providence Avenue and Ridley Creek.

Community meetings in the spring will explain the process to residents, who will be invited to submit applications for the camera/light packages, said Lisa Gaffney, RADC executive director.

“Part of the process is also getting the community to work together so it’s a tool for us to encourage community and neighborhood revitalization by bringing people into the process.”

The light-camera combinations have been previously installed in 42 homes in the city, according to Annette Pyatt, Chester Community Improvement Project executive director.

The cameras and lights have detered car break-ins and other incidents and improve the homes aesthetically, Pyatt said.

RADC is hoping to expand the program thorough corporate partners and foundations.
