A $100,000 state grant is funding efforts to bring county students to the healthcare and manufacturing industry, writes Kevin Tustin for Delco News Network.

The Delaware County Workforce Development Board is receiving the $100,000 Business-Education grant, a portion of $2.4 million being allocated state-wide.

The workforce board will partner with Educational Data Systems Inc. to expand a six-year-old career exploration and education program that serves county adults and high school students interested in manufacturing or health care careers.

“The partnerships that we’re seeing here today and the opportunity that that’s giving to so many of the residents in Delaware County, high school age, adults, the opportunity to learn the skills they need to be a key part of the workforce,” said State Department of Labor and Industry Secretary Jerry Oleksiak.

The grant funds career panels at area high schools, a career awareness fair at Delaware County Community College and industry-specific boot camps with curriculum vetted by employers held last summer and continuing over the next few months.

The hope is to close the skills gap and improve the regional workforce.

DCCC has three degree and nine certificate programs for manufacturing and 10 nursing degree programs plus five more certificate programs in that discipline.
