The Philadelphia Union’s United Soccer League club known as Bethehem Steel FC, will still play at Talen Energy Stadium in Chester next year, but it’ll have a new name, writes John George for the Philadelphia Business Journal.

The club, which competes in the USL Championship division, is becoming the Philadelphia Union II.

The Union had to move Bethlehem Steel out of its previous home, Lehigh University’s Goodman Stadium, after the USL ruled the venue did not meet league requirements for stadium lighting, field size and capacity.

“For the past several years, we have diligently explored numerous stadium options in the Lehigh Valley,” said Tim McDermott, the Philadelphia Union’s chief business officer. “Unfortunately, there still is not a viable stadium solution that will meet the current stadium requirements for the USL.”

McDermott said at the same time there are player development benefits from having its USL team located at the same campus and playing in the same stadium as the Union. The name change reflects that player development pathway.

Bethlehem Steel FC began play in 2016. USL teams help serve as a feeder to Major League Soccer, which the Philadelphia Union is a part of.
