Marple Newtown High School biology teacher Elizabeth Landes, winner of the national Milken Educator Award, was recognized Nov. 20 by the Pennsylvania House, writes Paul Vigna for pennlive.com.

Elizabeth Landes was one of 40 teachers nationally and the only one from Pennsylvania to be given what’s called the “Oscars of teaching.”

Pa. state Reps. Jennifer O’Mara (D-Delaware County-165th District) and Danielle Friel Otten (D-Chester County-155th District) spearheaded the ceremony.

O’Mara, who led off the presentation, said that “as an educator, Mrs. Landes realizes that she has the power to impact each of her student’s futures and this is not a power she takes lightly. Mrs. Landes goes to great length to support all of her students of all grades and levels, to ensure each one can reach his or her full potential.”

Landes was told about the award during an assembly at the high school on Oct. 3.

According to a story published Oct. 3 on inquirer.com, Foley told the students that teachers aren’t recognized in the same way as other elite professionals.

“Only if we elevate the teaching profession will talented young people like you” consider joining it.
