Tuesdays with Michael: It’s Time to Make Sure Your Ship Is Steering the Right Course

Last week, we talked about the power of planning for your ideal future and how taking an honest evaluation of the past is the first step toward that vision for the future.

So, this week I’d like to start with some reflection questions:

  • What has been working over the last 12 months?
  • What has not been working over the last 12 months?
  • What do you want more of?
  • What do you want less of?
  • What is truly important to you?
  • What new things do you want to do?

Review goals you set 12 months ago. What have you done/not done?

  • Did I achieve this goal? If not, why? If yes, why?
  • If I didn’t achieve this goal, what could I have done differently?
  • If I did achieve this goal, what resources did I draw from that enabled me to do so? Look at both internal and external resources.
  • What were the factors that were involved with whether or not I achieved my goals?
  • Am I in a better place this year as a result of this goal?
  • What is one very positive thing that came out of my goals last year?
  • Are the areas that I achieved in connected in any way?
  • What about those that I didn’t achieve in?
  • Based on my activity last year, how important where these goals to me?
  • As a whole, were my goals too high or too low?
  • What changes do you want to make to your written goals?

Spend some time reflecting on these questions.

Now consolidate everything into your master list of goals. Write your top three to five goals on goal-planning worksheets and keep them in front of you, so you can take action on them during the year.

Time to make sure your ship is steering the right course. We recommend about four hours per quarter and even more time every six months to really review, reflect, re-orient, re-plan, recommit, and realize rewards. Ideally, take a weekend and have a mini retreat that gives you uninterrupted time. This can be such a powerful, enlightening, and rewarding session.

Join us for a game-changing workshop entitled “Blueprint for Success, Growth, and Prosperity” on Wednesday, Dec. 4 from 8 AM-12:30 PM at Penn State Great Valley. Take a half-day to ensure that you have an exceptional year next year, as this powerful workshop will illuminate your desire to succeed, both personally and professionally.
