Springfield Healthplex Turned Over to Community YMCA of Eastern Delaware County
The Healthplex Sports Club in Springfield is being given to the Community YMCA of Eastern Delaware County, writes John George for the Philadelphia Business Journal.
Crozer-Keystone Health System is donating the 175,000-square-foot Club to the Y. The transfer takes place Jan. 18.
Crozer-Keystone will also make an annual donation to the YMCA over the next 10 years.
The transfer does not include the grounds or building, so Springfield Township will continue to receive tax dollars from the property.
Crozer-Keystone is owned by Prospect Medical Holdings, a for-profit hospital management company based in California.
It was one of the first health systems in the region to get into the health club business when it opened the Healthplex in 1996. For a short time after it opened, the fitness center served as a practice facility for the Philadelphia 76ers.
Michael Ranck, CEO of the YMCA of Eastern Delaware County, said the YMCA is developing “great plans” for community programs at the Healthplex.
“The fact that the health system is donating the Healthplex to the YMCA leaves us with far greater resources to invest in equipment, upgrades and employee talent,” he said.
