Two local private Roman Catholic Colleges have decided to ban students, faculty and staff from betting on the university’s sports teams, writes Andrew Maykuth for The Philadelphia Inquirer.

Students, faculty, and staff at Villanova and St. Joseph’s University are prohibited from betting on games in which the university’s teams are participants.

Villanova adopted the ban last November in the months following the U.S. Supreme Court’s decision that legalized sports betting outside of Nevada.

St. Joseph’s, likewise, has followed suit.

Student athletes and members of athletic departments are already banned from any sports betting for colleges that belong to the NCAA.

The new policies now extend to everyone on campus, creating kind of a moral ring-fence around the institution.

“How would we feel if a faculty member sent an e-mail to a student athlete saying, `You idiot, I put $10,000 on you hitting a free throw, and you missed it’?” said Jill Bodensteiner, St. Joseph’s athletics director.

Athletic department representatives at St. Joseph’s and Villanova said their new policies were prompted by a need to respond to the changes brought about by legalization.
