In a study of 90 top leaders from a variety of fields, leadership experts Warren Bennis and Burt Nanus made a discovery about the relationship between growth and leadership: “It is the capacity to develop and improve their skills that distinguishes leaders from their followers.”

Successful leaders are learners. And the learning process is ongoing, a result of self-discipline and perseverance. The goal each day must be to get a little better, to build on the previous day’s progress.

Successful people accept personal responsibility to master change and are proactive in planning and setting goals to grow and become all they can become. They face the world the way it is rather than the way they wish it would be, with no self-delusion, constantly confronting reality. Your life is like a blank sheet of paper that you can mold and shape into whatever you choose. You can continue to live in your history, or you can choose to create the future you want.
