Upland Police have a new community relations person who makes everyone feel better just by wagging her tail, writes Kevin Tustin for the Delaware County News Network.

A pit bull-type dog named Halo was adopted by the Upland Police Department in the spring. He’s not an official K9 unit dog but you’ll find her at the police department 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

On her adventures in the community Halo has developed her strongest bonds with children and has been an allure for positive interactions with the police officers.

“We did not expect this outcome,” said Police Lt. Michael Curran. “We sat there and decided to adopt a dog; the main focus was to save a dog from being euthanized. It turned into a great community-relations tool and the morale of the guys (officers) to see a happy dog wag her tail.”

After instituting a number of programs to enhance community support with police since being sworn in as chief in May 2017, Police Chief Michael Irey said he wanted to do something different.

Curran and Irey said the dog had a bad upbringing in a Philadelphia home before being rescued.
