A new station on Malin Road for Broomall Fire Company is ready to open after 20 years of planning, writes Pete Bannon for the Daily Times.

Fire Company President  Jim Capuzzi said they  hope to be in the new station by the end of the month.

“The old station was not big enough, it was built for three trucks back in the 50’s and no longer supports the size and fleet of eight fire trucks the company now uses,” Capuzzi said.

There was only had one toilet and no shower,  now a requirement for modern fire stations where crews sleep overnight.

The station sits on the old Marple school.  Marple Newtown School District eventually sold it to the township for $3 million dollars, which subdivided the property.

Partial funding for the $7.2 million project came from a $3.25 million Commonwealth of Pennsylvania Redevelopment Assistance Capital Program.

Marple township is contributing $3 million, part of which will be used to upgrade the traffic signal at West Chester Pike and Malin Road. The fire company will pay remaining costs.

The old station will be turned over to the township following the move.
