There’s a place where cancer patients and their families come for comfort and camaraderie without feeling as if they were in a hospital.

Called the Dr. Delores King Educational Program, it is named for  Marjani Harris grandmother, a 38-year Delaware County high school principal who died last December of an aggressive brain cancer, writes Jessica Press for The Philadelphia Inquirer.

The space hosts support groups and yoga sessions, helps children with homework, mentorships and field trips.

“She would be proud of what we’re doing with her name and that program,” Marjani says.

The center is part of Cancer WHO?, a nonprofit founded in 2013 by Marjani Harris and her husband Al.

It provides free services, including companionship during cancer treatments, support groups for family members, rides to appointments, and social get-togethers.

The idea came when their own families were touched by cancer.

“This is something that’s so easy and doesn’t take money to do, so why hasn’t anybody created anything like this?” Al Harris wondered. Marjani believed the couple could create something meaningful on their own.

Cancer WHO? has helped more than 250 families directly and touched the lives of thousands more.
