Seven years after his son was killed in Afghanistan, Charlie Strange of Philadelphia looked out at the crowds at the Walk for the Wounded and said they helped make a small dent into his grief, writes Kathleen Carey for the Delaware County News Network.
“With your support, it brings just a little piece of our heart back,” he said.
Thousands gathered at Rose Tree Park May 18 at the 12th annual Walk for the Wounded to honor military members who served and sacrificed.
The event, organized by Operation First Response, helps raise funds for service members and their families in need of financial help.
Portraits were given to two Gold Star families, Susan Price of Florida and Charlie and Mary Ann Strange.
Petty Officer First Class Michael Strange was one of 30 American service members who died in an Aug. 6, 2012, helicopter crash in Afghanistan. His parents created the Michael Strange Foundation to help other Gold Star families.
Peggy Baker, founder of Operation First Response, spoke to the families who have lost a loved one. “Please know we acknowledge your loss and will never take for granted the sacrifice each of you have made for us.”
