David Carter grew up in Chester, graduated Strath Haven High, tosses luggage at Philly airport and lives in Drexel Hill.

Some of you may know him better as iPodKingCarter, a man with more than 1 million followers on YouTube, Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter, writes Bob Fernandez for Philly.com.

Carter calls himself “one of the most public gaming figures out there in my genre,” (mostly sport video games). His gaming career has earned him about $100,000.

Carter has gained millions of online followers in recent years with the explosive growth of esports, or competitive video games.

Professional gamers earn prize money or salaries for competing in leagues. Tens of millions of esports fans play games and watch competitions on streaming services such as Twitch.

Carter mostly plays the video game NBA 2K.

“Kids are looking for information and they are not looking at magazines or editorial or even social media for it. They are looking on YouTube,” said Ronnie “Ronnie 2K” Singh, director of influencer marketing for the NBA 2K game.

As a game gains popularity, so do the videos that gamers create, building an online audience and potential advertising.
