A decorated Korean War veteran will be grand marshal for the Radnor Memorial Day Parade, writes Linda Stein for Main Line Media News.

The parade begins Monday, May 27, 9:45 a.m., at the Radnor Financial Center and concludes at the Radnor War Memorial.

Richard Guyer, 88, formerly of Wayne, was a Marine staff sergeant who survived the harrowing 17-day Chosin Reservoir Campaign in November and December of 1950.

Some 30,000 United Nations troops were surrounded by 120,000 Chinese Communist soldiers. There were 1,029 U.N. troops killed, 4,582 wounded, with 4,894 missing, according to historian Kennedy Hickman.

Guyer’s job was to string radio wires near the Chosin Reservoir to keep the scattered units in touch.

Infiltrators and mortars would break landlines and “my job, at that point in time was trouble shooting that line,” said Guyer.

Guyer was awarded nine medals, including the Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal for Valor in Combat; the Combat Action ribbon: the Navy and Marine Corps Presidential Unit Citation with three bronze stars; and the Korean Service medal with a silver star.

“It’s been a long journey,” said Richard Guyer. “If I had to I would do it all over again.”
