Middletown Township voters will decide the fate of Sleighton Farms, which is currently owned by Elwyn, during the upcoming primary election, writes Kathleen Carey for the Daily Times.

The ballot will contain a referendum question on whether residents want to add an average of $8.47 monthly to their tax bill to save the 81-acre property as open space for a passive park. If they vote yes on May 21, community members will authorize the township to use $8 million to purchase the property and for related costs, including closing costs, legal expenses, and appraisals.

Earlier this year, township council members approved an agreement of sale to acquire the 80.992 acres of open space from Elwyn. But the agreement is contingent on voter approval.

“The acquisition of these 81 acres will continue the Middletown community’s leadership in Delaware County in the preservation of open space,” said the township council at the time.

The purchase would make the township the county’s largest holder of open space with 640 acres.

On May 4, community members can visit the property for the onsite Open House, where township council and staff will be on hand to answer any questions.
