Delaware County Technical School students recently took part in “A Day in the Life of a First Responder” at Delaware County Emergency Services Training Center to experience the feeling of responding to an emergency call, writes Ginger Rae Dunbar for The Daily Local News.

During the day, the students responded to a number of police, fire, and EMS scenarios with help from the Delaware County 911 Center. The center had a mobile unit on scene used to dispatch the units for training purposes. Using a private channel, the students got to practice talking on the radio. They also had to carefully follow the notes provided by dispatchers on the patients they would encounter.

Rachael McCullough, an EMS student leader in vo-tech, said it is a good way to get people involved with volunteering and get them interested in pursuing a career in that field.

“It’s hard work, but it’s worth it,” she said.

Kestin Wiemer, lead instructor of the Emergency and Protective Services Program Delaware County Technical Schools, said students benefit from participating in realistic scenarios and from using the equipment used by fire companies, police officers, and EMS personnel.
