Springfield resident and attorney Joel Feldman, whose daughter was hit and killed by a distracted driver, is trying to change how people drive with hour-long presentations on the dangers of distracted driving, writes Ximena Conde for WHYY.

Feldman does not use scare tactics in his presentations, believing they won’t sway people who often text or use Snapchat while driving.

“I need to connect with them on a personal level,” said Feldman, who begins his lectures by admitting he used to drive distractedly.

He also shares how his daughter Casey died. In 2009, the 21-year old was on a crosswalk in Ocean City, N.J., heading to work, when a driver reaching for his GPS ran a stop sign and hit her.

That year, her parents established The Casey Feldman Memorial Foundation and EndDD.org.

Since 2010, Feldman has traveled the nation educating people on the dangers of distracted driving through presentations he made with the help of experts from the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia’s Center for Injury Research and Prevention.

Feldman recently visited Marple Newtown High School and Monsignor Bonner & Archbishop Prendergast, and will spend April, Distracted Driving Awareness Month, speaking in Pennsylvania, Colorado, and Kentucky.
