When compared to other states, Pennsylvania continues to lag behind in entrepreneurial activity, according to a new report from the Ewing Marion Kauffman Foundation, writes Gene Marks for the Philadelphia Inquirer.

The report tracks entrepreneurial changes in all states from 1996 through 2017 by measuring the rate of startups, job creation, and survival. Nationwide, entrepreneurial activity has increased with California, Florida, and Texas being the best states for startups during that period.

Pennsylvania ranked among the worst overall and in the rate of new entrepreneurs. However, it ranks among the Top 20 with the highest rate of survival for startups within the first year.

According to Sameeksha Desai, director of Knowledge Creation and Research in Entrepreneurship at the foundation, the report “can help you think about what next steps to investigate.”

Another positive for those planning to start a business in the area are the many resources available, such as the Small Business Development Centers at both Wharton and Temple.

Meanwhile, SCORE offers individual consultants, while the Urban League of Philadelphia runs an entrepreneurship center. There are also more resources from the City of Philadelphia, local chambers of commerce, and other groups, like the Center City Proprietors Association.
