Last month, Surrey Services for Seniors debuted a new program, Weekend Respite Care, that gives caregivers a much-needed break to reduce stress and refresh energy.

The Devon-based nonprofit with additional locations in Broomall, Media, and Havertown boasts an array of services that facilitates aging in place, that helps older adults remain living at home with independence and dignity.

“Surrey’s mission is to help the older adults in our community,” said Robert Madonna, Surrey’s CEO. “We are always innovating to make a difference in people’s lives.”

Weekend Respite Care is an exciting addition to the menu of programs offered by Surrey, which recently received the 2019 Nonprofit of the Year Award from the Chester County Chamber of Business and Industry. It enables older adults to maintain physical and mental health, stay socially connected, and pursue interests and hobbies.

Weekend Respite Care is offered two weekends per month, from 10 AM-3 PM, during the launch period, which runs through June. The first step to enroll in the program is an assessment conducted by a Surrey staff member. This is necessary even if the individual has received services from Surrey in the past.

The assessment is a critical component for optimal care. During this process, Surrey’s staff will collect all necessary medical and contact information. More importantly, this is also when the client’s interests, hobbies, preferences, and more are discussed.

Clients will be able to schedule the days they would like to participate during the assessment meeting. Transportation may be available for an additional cost.

Participants will have a choice of activities to participate in each day. Snacks and meals are included as part of the daily schedule. Individuals’ preferences and needs will be incorporated in a personalized care plan to ensure they are engaged and comfortable.

“On our first weekend, we had a woman who had not been away from her husband for five years,” Madonna said. “She and her husband both had a wonderful day.”
