Mom-and-Pop Mart in Newtown Square Not Bowing Down to New Whole Foods

Luigi & Giovanni’s, the mom-and-pop mart in Newtown Square, does not plan to bow down to the new Whole Foods Market that recently opened nearby, writes Maria Panaritis for the Philadelphia Inquirer.

The market has been there since 1978, when it was bought by John D’Alessandro, also known as Giovanni, and his butcher and business partner, Luigi Lemme.

The store has grocery shelves and meat cases in the center aisles of the store, while the market also has a back room filled with men working from butcher blocks.

The owners admit that keeping the place alive is no picnic, but they’re not worried about the new supermarket, or adjusting to match its offerings.

“I don’t have anything organic in here,” said D’Alessandro. “We’re eaters. We get it. We put it out. It’s food.”
