The legacy of the pioneering, but mostly forgotten work of Wallingford native William Price, who reshaped architecture, continues to live on in nearby Rose Valley, writes J.F. Pirro for Main Line Today.

According to cultural and architectural historian George Thomas, Price invented what became Art Deco.

“Everyone still calls it Art Deco, but it was actually Art Price,” said Thomas.

Price is now starting to gain more recognition almost a century after his death. His most concentrated body of work is in Rose Valley.

Rose Valley was established in 1901, and within four years, it had furniture, metalworking, and pottery shops, along with artists’ studios.

Examples of Price’s work can be seen at Thunderbird Lodge, home of the Rose Valley Museum & Historical Society.
