Even in Retirement, Longtime Costume Designer from Ridley Still Contributes to Mummers Parade

Three years after officially retiring, longtime designer James May from Ridley Township created the captain’s costume for the Avalon String Band in this year’s Mummers Parade, writes Barbara Ormsby for the Delaware County News Network.

The prolific designer spent more than four decades designing costumes. When he began, he came up with the idea of a large pant leg that swayed as band members marched, and dubbed it the Jimmy May Sway.

For this year, he created the captain’s costume in exchange for an authentic Mummers costume and the hat Philadelphia Eagles center Jason Kelce wore in last year’s Super Bowl parade.

“Jason wore that costume and hat last year in the Super Bowl parade, and I consider that hat to be the Super Bowl championship hat,” said May.

After the parade, May created a number of replicas of the famous hat. He then donated many of them to charitable causes, including the Mummers with Cancer Fund and the Shriners Hospital for Children.

“Jason signed several hats, and I told him that the signed hats are the only ones that will go toward raising money for charities,” said May.
