An anonymous donor has made a $500,000 donation to the Hebrew Free Loan Society of Greater Philadelphia for interest-free, short-term loans to federal employees in the Philadelphia area affected by the government shutdown, writes Diane Mastrull for the Philadelphia Inquirer.

To qualify for the Federal Worker Emergency Relief Loan established by the donation, recipients must live in one of the nine Philadelphia-area counties, including Chester and Delaware counties. Applicants need to complete an application. Those eligible will then receive an appointment to pick up their check at the Constitution Center at 525 Arch Street.

At the appointment, they will have to provide photo ID, proof of address and salary, and that they are a federal employee not receiving pay due to the government shutdown.

The loans do not require a co-signer. Recipients need to repay them 90 days after the government reopens.

“It’s good to see people actually care,” said Ira Coleman, 30, a customer service representative for the Internal Revenue Service and a single father.
