Radnor-based Help Hope Live assists people who require organ transplants in raising money to cover medical expenses, including lifelong, post-transplant care, writes JoNel Aleccia for The New York Times.

“What people don’t really understand is that it’s important to have the funds on the back end to pay for medications and other costs,” said Kelly Green, the nonprofit’s executive director.

The issue of fundraising for medical expenses was in the spotlight last month, when a woman from Michigan was denied a heart transplant because she could not afford the anti-rejection drugs. So Hedda Martin posted a letter on social media asking for advice, and she was advised by Spectrum Health to attempt “a fundraising effort of $10,000.”

Sadly, this is not uncommon. GoFundMe efforts have now become a popular way for people to raise money for medical expenses. The company said that nearly a third of campaigns on the site are for medical needs.

However, according to transplant experts, when patients need to raise money for organ transplants, they should turn to fundraising organizations that are set up to cover these costs like Help Hope Live.
