Wedding Cake Brings Lansdowne Baker Internet Fame and a Flood of Requests

By

A wedding cake created by Zakiyyah McKelven in the image of Gritty, the Philadelphia Flyers’ new mascot, quickly went viral and created a flood of requests for the Lansdowne baker, according to a report from CBS Philly.

McKelven, who owns Kia’s Cakes & Café in Lansdowne, was commissioned to create Catherine Coll and Michael Bair’s three-tier wedding cake. The groom, however, had one strange request. He wanted a Gritty cake.

“It was added onto the couple’s order a week before the wedding,” said McKelven. “They came in and asked if it would be too much trouble to add it. I thought the idea was hilarious, and it’s always so refreshing when a couple is willing to have fun with their wedding day.”

Once she was satisfied with the final product, she posted photos online, where they quickly went viral. Now, the baker is inundated with requests for more Gritty cakes.

“Yes, we are making Gritty cupcakes at the bakery all this week,” said McKelven.
