IKEA Plans to Expand Philadelphia Area Footprint with New Store Formats

IKEA is planning to expand its Greater Philadelphia footprint with new small-format stores and plan and order points

IKEA, with its U.S. headquarters in Conshohocken, is planning to expand its Greater Philadelphia footprint with new format stores, writes Emma Dooling for the Philadelphia Business Journal.

The popular Swedish retailer is experiencing an unprecedented growth spurt with two types of new stores: smaller locations from 50,000 to 100,000 square feet and plan and order points. Here customers cannot take items home but can plot their orders with an IKEA employee. Purchases are later delivered to the customer’s home or picked up at hundreds of available sites.

IKEA’s first plan and order point in Greater Philadelphia will open on June 18 in the Ellisburg Shopping Center in Cherry Hill, New Jersey. The furniture giant currently has two large, approximately 300,000-square-foot stores in the area. One next to its Conshohocken headquarters and the other in South Philadelphia. There is also a pick-up location in Swedesboro, New Jersey.

Through the company’s growth, IKEA plans to keep and grow its base in the Philadelphia area.

“We’re really ingrained in the community,” said IKEA COO Rob Olson. “It is something we’re proud of and something we continue to work with and plan to stay connected to over time, for sure.”
