Ivan Concepcion, a corporate assistant controller, enrolled in Penn State Great Valley’s Master of Finance program to think ahead and bring a new perspective to his company, according to a report from Penn State News.

Concepcion, who has a bachelor’s degree in accounting, already has an impressive resume. He got a job right out of college with a Big Four accounting firm, earned his CPA, and has since held a number of auditing and reporting positions at different consumer product companies.

He decided to enroll in the Penn State Great Valley program to expand his financial acumen and give added value to his company. He attributes his success in the program to having extensive work experience and being able to rely on real scenarios and examples from the various positions he’s held.

“I’m not here for a degree,” he said. “I’m here for the experience; I want to bring a new perspective to my company.”

He said that he chose finance because, unlike accounting, which looks backwards, it is forward-thinking.

“Finance is creative and focused on the future,” he said.
