Haverford native David West, the CEO of medical technology company Proscia, has been named in the healthcare section of Forbes’s 30 under 30 list for 2018, writes John George for the Philadelphia Business Journal.

The 24-year-old graduated from St. Joe’s Prep before enrolling at Johns Hopkins University. Four years ago, he founded the company, along with friends Nathan Buchbinder and Coleman Stavish, to use artificial intelligence to improve upon how pathologists diagnose cancer.

Proscia has developed a cloud-based platform that uses A.I. to eliminate the subjective analysis in analyzing biopsies. Instead, the system identifies problem areas by evaluating an image and makes distinctions between, for example, a basal cell carcinoma or a more serious melanoma.

The system provides researchers and pathologists with the ability to upload, extract, and manipulate data. It also makes it possible for different people around the globe to examine the image at the same time.

Proscia, which was previously based in Baltimore, made the decision to move its headquarters to Philadelphia last year.

“We want to tap into the talent pool Philadelphia has in the technology field,” West said at the time.
