Delaware County native Kimberly Fairbanks has taken on the role of Cynthia in Sweat, a Pulitzer Prize-winning play, writes Rita Charleston for The Philadelphia Tribune.

Presented by the Philadelphia Theatre Company, the play explores Reading, a once-vibrant community in Pennsylvania facing a shrinking economy. As this happens, fear, tragedy, and hopelessness start to set in throughout the community.

With layoffs and the plant closing on the horizon, a group of working-class friends start looking at each other differently.

“The play examines the disintegration of the friendship between two of the women – one black, one white – who apply for the same job,” said Fairbanks.

She said that race then starts to play a major role in the lives of people who once loved each other. But now they fall back on things they might have learned in their childhoods, causing their friendships to erode.

Fairbanks said she was able to relate to the character she plays.

“It’s certainly not difficult for audiences to relate to this play and the human issues involved,” she said.
