A recent survey by the CDC’s Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BFRSS) has found that people in Pennsylvania are an average height of around 178 centimeters, or 5-foot-10, writes Christopher Ingraham for The Washington Post.

The massive annual survey of health and wellness polled almost a half-million people for the study. The BRFSS was designed to track trends across states and around the nation for weight and obesity, healthy eating, physical activity, and finally height.

The height differences, while not significant, are interesting. For example, the state with the shortest people on average is Hawaii at 175 centimeters. Meanwhile, Alabama and Iowa are generally the tallest, averaging around 180 centimeters. Taller people tend to come from the northern plain states, while people from the northeast and southwest are generally shorter.

For women, the average height across the country is 163 centimeters, with the tallest coming from South Dakota and the shortest from Hawaii. The data, however, may not be accurate as it is self-reported.

In fact, it has been scientifically proven that people lie about their height, although this is more common in men than women.
