A few schools in Delaware County are breaking the boundaries of traditional teaching with new ways to enhance students’ learning, writes Jessica Press for Philadelphia magazine.

Open Connections in Newtown Square offers a partnership program in which students, along with their parents and teachers, design their own unique learning experiences.

This gives students the option of a more standard course covering languages, science, math, and other basic subjects. Others have the option of attending just a few days in combination with homeschooling. Hannah Nicols, 16, enjoys the independence.

“I think taking control of your education and your life is a great way of preparing for the real world,” she said.

Meanwhile, The School in Rose Valley has a farm-to-fork program that teaches students everything from botany to problem solving. It also saves the school around $11,000 in food costs.

Also, The Haverford School is addressing the need for students to be equal partners. The program includes promoting meaningful conversations about how boys can take a more proactive role in creating and building safe, healthy relationships.
