Tonight, the Philadelphia Union will return to Yankee Stadium – the site of its regular-season finale, a 3-1 loss to New York City FC on Sunday – as it begins its quest for the franchise’s first MLS Cup.

The Union compiled a 15-14-5 record this season, good enough for 50 points, and has qualified for the playoffs for the third time since it began play on the Delaware Riverfront in 2010. As the sixth seed in the Eastern Conference, the Union will face third-seeded NYCFC in the Knockout Round in the Bronx.

“We know what the task is,” said Union coach Jim Curtin, a local who competed scholastically in the Philadelphia Catholic League at Bishop McDevitt High School and collegiately at Villanova. “It will be difficult, but again, we’ve stepped up in tough moments before.”

Curtin is not the only member of the franchise with local ties. Defenders Keegan Rosenberry and Auston Trusty are slated to start tonight.

Rosenberry is a Lancaster County native who graduated from Lancaster Mennonite High School, while Trusty grew up in the shadow of Talen Energy Stadium, in Media, and briefly attended Penncrest High School before signing with the Union Academy.

“We can go toe to toe with this team and get a result we need to get to the next round of playoffs,” said captain Alejandro Bedoya.

The Union is offering fans attending the 7 PM match a free bus ride to New York City. The bus will leave at 3 PM from Lot B at Talen Energy Stadium.
