Famed Rivalry Between Wawa and Sheetz Intensifies as Politics Gets Involved

By

The famed rivalry between Wawa and Sheetz has intensified after politics got involved with the convenience-store chains donating to opposing campaigns for the governor of Pennsylvania, write Holly Otterbein and Chris Brennan for the Philadelphia Inquirer.

According to campaign records released last week, Wawa donated $10,000 to Scott Wagner, the Republican businessman who is running against Gov. Tom Wolf. The records also show that its political action committee donated $2,500 to Wagner’s campaign earlier this year.

At the same time, Sheetz donated $10,000 to Gov. Wolf.

Their preferences are somewhat surprising, considering that Democrats outnumber Republicans by seven to one in Philadelphia. Meanwhile, within Sheetz’s domain in the western part of the state, voters tend to be more conservative.

However, both candidates managed to dodge the question about which is their favorite.

A spokesperson for Wagner, Andrew Romeo, said he “loves all the convenience stores in Pennsylvania and will stop at whichever one is closest.”

Beth Melena, Wolf’s spokesperson, said that “though he is a fan of both Wawa and Sheetz, Gov. Wolf is a Rutter’s guy.”

Both chains also played it safe, saying that they have given to both Democrats and Republicans in the past.
