The importance of Cheyney and Lincoln universities was highlighted recently at the United Negro College Fund’s inaugural Philadelphia Leaders Luncheon, writes John Mitchell for The Philadelphia Tribune.

The futures of the two HBCUs in the Philadelphia area were discussed by African-American leaders in education. They concluded the two institutions have to become powerhouses of technology to succeed.

Governor Tom Wolf, UNCF President Michael Lomax, Lincoln University President Brenda Allen, and Cheyney University President Aaron Walton discussed ways the value of education for African-Americans could be increased.

According to Allen, Lincoln has been expanding its liberal arts program and working on bringing more African-American males to the campus by collaborating with the Mayor’s Commission on African-American Males and other groups in the region.

Meanwhile, Cheyney has partnered with Thomas Jefferson University, Starbucks, and others to create the Cheyney University Institute for a Contemporary African-American Experience.

“We are blessed to have two universities in Lincoln and Cheyney and they have done an amazing job for this commonwealth and will continue to have a major impact on this commonwealth,” said Wolf.
