Despite Wawa’s sweeping popularity in Greater Philadelphia, not every new super-sized store is welcomed by residents in the suburbs, writes Erin McCarthy for the Philadelphia Inquirer.

As the homegrown chain of convenience stores continues to expand, opposition to some of its stores is growing. This includes the latest one planned for Wayne.

Neighbors near the proposed location a half-mile away from an existing Wawa are expressing their concern over noise, traffic congestion, and pedestrian safety. They are joining residents in Doylestown, Hatboro, Abington, and Upper Gwynedd who have been engaged in fierce battles over Wawa’s plans to open new stores.

“Overall, we find that communities are very excited about our new stores,” said Wawa spokeswoman Lori Bruce. “We work hard to ensure that every new store brings a sense of community and is something our associates and customers are all proud to call ‘their Wawa.’”
