Delaware County Community College President a Change Agent in Education Industry

By

Dr. L. Joy Gates Black

Since being named President of Delaware County Community College last year, Dr. L. Joy Gates Black has been bringing steady change to the community college, writes Michelle Caffrey for the Philadelphia Business Journal.

As both the first African-American and the first woman to lead the school, Dr. Gates Black took over during a booming economy, when fewer students were choosing community colleges. After conversations with the college’s stakeholders, she introduced a new committee to work on institutional effectiveness.

She has also increased the college’s dual enrollment programs, including one with West Chester University, which now has a dedicated presence on Delaware County Community College’s campus.

Enrollment has increased by seven percent, and will likely continue to grow with the addition of late-starting courses for part-time students.
