
As both the first African-American and the first woman to lead the school, Dr. Gates Black took over during a booming economy, when fewer students were choosing community colleges. After conversations with the college’s stakeholders, she introduced a new committee to work on institutional effectiveness.
She has also increased the college’s dual enrollment programs, including one with West Chester University, which now has a dedicated presence on Delaware County Community College’s campus.
Enrollment has increased by seven percent, and will likely continue to grow with the addition of late-starting courses for part-time students.
