Glenolden resident Maureen Kelly Kilmartin-Carreño recently organized her friends and neighbors to prepare bags of food for addicts and the homeless as part of “Operation in My Back Yard,” writes Kathleen Carey for Daily Times.
“Operation in My Back Yard” was founded in December by Nicole Bixler as a harm-reduction advocacy group to provide addicts with meals and access to medical supplies. Members go to Kensington two to three times a week to provide care for those suffering from addiction.
Since joining the operation, Kilmartin-Carreño has become an invaluable part of the group.

“She’s great,” said Bixler.
When the food operation swings into action, there are stations dedicated to salad-making, sandwich-making, and bagging, as well as clean-up. For this weekend’s food-bagging operation, Kilmartin-Carreño mobilized 20 people, ranging in age from six to 70 years old, and plans to continue doing so at least one a month.
“I’m in it for the long haul,” she said. “A lot of our Delco kids end up there. So, we’re all in this together. If it’s ‘Operation in My Backyard.’ It’s my backyard. Our kids are going there.”
