Delaware County is among the Top 10 counties in Pennsylvania for voter gains by one party, as there has been a surge in voters here registered as Democrats, writes Nick Field for City & State Pennsylvania.

Delaware County is not the only county turning bluer. Unlike the previous two years when Republicans recorded significant gains across the state, the last 12 months have seen the momentum swing the other way.

Compared to a year ago, Democrats have increased their advantage over Republicans statewide from 808,974 registered voters to 812,451. On the county level, six out of the Top 10 counties have seen significant gains for Democrats, compared to last year when Republicans held all 10 spots.

The primary reason for the surge seems to be enthusiasm. According to a TargetSmart review of the Parkland survivors’ efforts to register younger voters, Pennsylvania saw a 16 percent increase in voters between 18 and 29 years old.

Delaware County is second on the list as it recorded 6,329 more newly registered voters for Democrats than Republicans. Delco was only outpaced in its gains by neighboring Montgomery County, which took the top spot.
