The Frontier Saloon and Restaurant, in the Folsom section of Ridley Township, is for sale, writes Peg DeGrassa for the Delaware County News Network.

The iconic business has been a fixture on Kedron Avenue near its intersection with MacDade Boulevard for 45 years. It sits on a 1.6-acre property.

In addition to the tavern, the sale includes an adjoining take-out beer store and storage room, the Frontier’s liquor license, the parking lot, and the building that houses Charlie’s Hamburgers.

The fate of Charlie’s Hamburgers, an 80-year-old Delaware County institution, depends on the plans of the new buyer and on the owners of Charlie’s.

“I’ve had some great years here, but 45 years of running a place has been enough for me,” said Frontier Saloon owner Jill Keenan. “I am ready to retire.”

Keenan and her late husband, Joseph, bought the Frontier Saloon and Restaurant in 1974. They purchased the full property at the site in 1976. Joseph Keenan died in 1989.

Jill Keenan’s son, Ian Keenan, the Frontier’s general manager, said several changes in recent years factored into his mother’s decision to sell the business and property. The biggest change was when Pennsylvania made changes to its liquor laws.

“When the Acme began selling beer, our take-out business took a 25 percent hit,” Ian Keenan said. Beer distributors also started to be able to sell six-packs, which further impacted the Frontier’s bottom line.
