This Sunday, the descendants of Nelson and Harriet Clayton will continue their seven-decades-long tradition of gathering every summer in the Nelson D. Clayton Memorial Park in Garnet Valley, writes Peg DeGrassa for the Delaware County News Network.

Cars full of family members, from the youngest at 10 months old to the oldest at age 96, will gather in the park to memorialize the family patriarch and matriarch. Some family members will travel from North Carolina and Texas, while others are from areas of Delaware, Chester, and Bucks counties.

Nelson Clayton, a prominent farmer in the first half of the last century, and his wife Harriet owned Garnet Mine Valley Farms. At the time, the farm received an award from the Farm Bureau of Delaware and Chester counties “for the greatest farm production in the area, contributing distinctly to America’s war effort.”

Harriet donated 59 acres of the farm to Delaware County in April 1957 to honor and preserve her husband’s memory, as well as the natural beauty of the land. The stipulation was that the land should be used as a public park and playground.
