According to new research, people may literally be able to create their own luck by keeping an open mind, writes Teresa Iafolla for Nautilus magazine.

According to Richard Wiseman, Professor of Public Understanding of Psychology at the University of Hertfordshire in the U.K., some people appear to have an uncanny ability to be in the right place at the right time.

Wiseman began his research in the 1990s by testing self-proclaimed lucky and unlucky people to find out what the difference was. One of his tests was to put a $20 bill in the street and see who picked it up. What he found was that the lucky people noticed it but the unlucky people didn’t.

He followed this up with a number of similar experiments and found that lucky people spotted opportuities while others did not.

Now Christine Carter, a senior fellow at the Greater Good Science Center at the University of California, has a new theory. She has developed basic strategies for parents to teach their kids. And while she admits it’s not easy, she has found that teaching kids to be more observant can lead to them becoming more lucky, which leads to better opportunities in life.
