Philadelphia’s great museums may have a role in the city making it onto the shortlist for Amazon’s second headquarters, writes Sebastian Smee for The Washington Post.

Many of the 238 cities and counties that applied for HQ2 consideration have the population, pleasant surroundings, and basic infrastructure required by Amazon. But the 20 cities on the shortlist also offer access to great museums.

The correlation can be found in Amazon’s criteria that lists requirements such as excellent higher education and low crime rates. But the company also says it’s looking for “locations with the potential to attract and retain strong technical talent” where its “employees will enjoy living, recreational opportunities, educational opportunities, and an overall high quality of life.”

Philadelphia has the kind of historically great museums that create a whole ecosystem of art around them. In addition to the Philadelphia Museum of Art, the city has several private house museums like the Barnes Foundation, contemporary museums like ICA Philadelphia, and more.
