Upper Darby native Nancy Romain, a math teacher and department chair at Daniel Boone High School in Berks County, views her subject as a big puzzle to be solved, according to a report in the Reading Eagle.

“Mathematics is a big puzzle, and I love seeing all of the pieces fall into place,” she said.

Romain appreciates how math is cumulative in nature, and that she can see her students’ progress over the three or four years she teaches them.

“It is extremely rewarding to watch these students mature mathematically,” she said. “I love seeing the excitement of my students when they have ‘aha’ moments and understand how a process works and how to reach a solution.”

Romain herself had many wonderful teachers while growing up in Upper Darby. They inspired her to pursue a career in education.

“My passion for math was sparked by Mrs. McHale and Mrs. Hazelbaker, my algebra teachers at Beverly Hills Junior High School in Upper Darby,” she said. “I can still remember being excited when my second-grade teacher Ms. Drew asked me to help her grade papers.”
