The Board of Trustees of the Brandywine Conservancy & Museum of Art has approved the purchase of a 13-acre tract of land on Birmingham Hill in the heart of Brandywine Battlefield.

This purchase is the culmination of Brandywine’s quarter-of-a-century-long effort to preserve the more than 500 acres surrounding Meetinghouse Road in Birmingham Township. This is where the fiercest fighting took place during the Battle of Brandywine.

Currently owned by the Estate of Roberta Odell, the land is close to the Battle of Brandywine’s epicenter. Once the purchase is finalized, it will be merged with an adjacent, 100-acre property acquired by Brandywine 11 years ago. This will bring the acres under permanent protection to more than 500.

“This is a key piece of land that the Brandywine has long sought to preserve in order to protect this historic site,” said Ellen Ferretti, Director of the Brandywine Conservancy. “I’m pleased to see it finally coming to fruition.”

Next, a master plan will be developed for the combined properties. The goal is to preserve the property’s historic integrity, develop educational programs, and conserve its natural resources.
